(redirected from Main.ParishNews) St. John’s Calendar of Events and Announcements for May, 2012 May begins in the Liturgical Season of Easter. Easter continues for 7 weeks (known as the Great 50 Days of Easter) until Pentecost, beginning on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Sunday Services are at 8am and 10am. Sunday School (Ages 3–11 and 12–18) and Nursery are available starting at 9:45am. Holy Eucharist (with Healing Services) is held each Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. The Girls Friendly Society meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month (5/14), 4:15–5:45pm in the Sunday School rooms. GFS is for girls ages 5 and older. NOTE: MAY 14 IS THE LAST GFS MEETING FOR THIS YEAR!!! More information at Girl’s Friendly Society USA and GFS of LA Facebook Page. Monday nights are Adult Bible Study, 7:00pm in the Sunday School rooms. We are currently studying the Apocrypha, specifically the two books of Macabees. We are now in 1 Macabees, Chapter 5, text courtesy of The King James Bible Online. Join us any Monday. Barbara has full notes from each week. Anyone can read the notes and catch up at any time. The Teens currently meet weekly in the Library Rm next to the office during Sunday School time (~9:45–10:45am). There will be studies but also planning for Youth Group activities. Note: The Teens are going on a camping trip May 19–20! Click on our Teens page to see details on the group and their activities. Teens Campout! Saturday May 19, 8am till Sunday May 20, 11am. We leave and return from the church. Check out the Teens&Twenties Web Page for all details, the required permission slip and a list of what to bring. Tea and Company with St. John’s Manor is on the fourth Thursday of each month, 3:00pm at the Manor. Joan makes the most delicious tea- you must try some! The 4th Thursday this month is 5/24. The Beach Cities Interfaith Services food for May is cereal. They are grateful for whatever we can bring. Peanut butter and jelly are always helpful. There is a continuing need for toiletry items, both personal size and family size and SOCKS- any kind of socks. Any and all staple food items are always welcome. The number of people in poverty in Orange County has doubled in the last year. That’s right- doubled! Our goal is to bring one food item (can, jar, box, bag, carton, etc.) per person each Sunday. Please help! We are continuing to bring in NEW children’s outfits WITH NEW TAGS ATTACHED for children at Orangewood. Any age from infant thru teens will be fine. Orangewood now requires all clothes to be new, so please leave the new tags attached! Do you have clothes you no longer need? We need clothes for men, women, and children in shelters. The men’s prison ministry is in need of long-sleeved shirts and XL XXL and XXXL underwear. Drop off whatever you can spare at the church. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes please tag your donation with your name and address. Socks! One of the most needed items for people on the streets and for the children at Orangewood is socks. New or gently used socks for men, women, and children are much appreciated. Note that Orangewood can no longer accept used items, only new clothes WITH TAGS STILL ATTACHED!!! The Rainbow Outreach Men’s Prison Ministries have been overwhelmed recently by federal mandates to the state to reduce prison populations. They have two buildings now and have almost doubled the number of men. Yes, that means we once again need all the things we provided before- twin sheets, pillows, and linens. We still need tootbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, cream, shaving DEODORANT, Gold Bond Powder, NON-ALCOHOLIC MOUTH WASH, bath towels, washcloths. NOTE: NO MORE SOAP NEEDED! They are also in need of long-sleeved men’s dress shirts (needed for job interviews). Used but not worn out items gratefully accepted, including any men’s clothes. Thank you for your contributions. Tax deduction receipts always available upon your request. We are sad to announce that the Phoenix House/Grace’s Place ministries for incarcerated women which allowed their children to stay with them has been cancelled by the state due to the budget. The women have returned to prisons and the children to foster care homes, but we must remain faithful and hopeful for all we provided them. Deacon Sue is now looking for other outreach ministries in which we may participate. Please keep Deacon Sue in your prayers as she and St. John’s seek the will of our Lord as to which outreach ministries we may adopt next. HOWEVER, we are still in contact with Alexa, the child of one of the Grace’s Place women who has been granted by the courts an opportunity to attend Camp Stevens this summer. She is soooooo excited about going to camp! Please keep her in your prayers. We have almost raised enough funds to pay her way now. We are trying to get her signed up for the week of camp in August when Rev. Lisa Golden will be chaplain. How special will that be! Do you still read a paper? Please bring your recyclable newspapers to the box in the Guild Room or drop them directly in the recycle bin in the parking lot. We have started a new ministry to help St. Clement’s, Huntington Park keep their doors open. We will try to supply their toilet paper needs for the coming year. Bring new supplies of toilet paper to the church for delivery. Our diocesan consultant, Cindy Vorhees, is involved with the BuildingAfrica ministries. Contributions are welcome by visiting http://www.BuildingAFRICA.org/contribute/. Coming in June: Graduations and Engagements and Weddings- Oh my! The Altar Guild usually meets the first Saturday of each month (6/2) at 9:00am in the sanctuary of the church. Like working with flowers? Enjoy setting a beautiful table of fresh pressed linens, beautiful flowers and Communion for the Lord? Stop by and find out what we do. Vestry Meetings are the second Sunday each month after 10:00am service (~11:15am). The next Vestry meeting is June 3. The Vestry usually meets in the Guild Room. Friday with Friends, a dinner with our friends from St. John’s Manor next door, is usually the second Friday of each month (6/8).Dennis has been thinking that BBQ weather has arrived. What delicacy from the grill awaits us this month? The Daughters of the King (Adult Women) meet on the second Tuesdays each month (6/13), for prayer and fellowship, 6:30pm at the church. |
