St. John’s Calendar of Events and Announcements for February, 2012

February begins in the Liturgical Season Epiphany and ends in Lent.

Sunday Services are at 8am and 10am. Sunday School (Ages 3–13) and Nursery are available at 9:45am.

Holy Eucharist (with Healing Services) is held each Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m.

The Girls Friendly Society meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month (2/13&27), 4:15–5:45pm in the Sunday School rooms. GFS is for girls ages 5 and older. More information at Girl’s Friendly Society USA and GFS of LA Facebook Page.

Monday nights are Adult Bible Study, 7:00pm in the Sunday School rooms. We are currently studying the Apocrypha, specifically the two books of Macabees, starting with 1 Macabees. Text at 1 Macabees courtesy of The King James Bible Online. Join us any Monday. Barbara has full notes from each week. Anyone can read the notes and catch up at any time.

St. Valentine’s Day- Tuesday February 14th!

The Daughters of the King (Adult Women) meet on the second Tuesdays each month (2/14), for prayer and fellowship, 6:30pm at the church, but not tonight! It’s Valentine’s Day.

Do you like to sew? We have a group of enthusiastic sewers who are meeting first and third Thursdays (2/2&16) each month from 10:00am-12:00noon in the Guild room to sew whatever may be needed. The group often sews special things for women and children in need. Bring your sewing machine and notions and pleasant conversations and joins us.

Vocal Choir practice 9:00–9:50am Sunday 2/19.

The Teens&Twenties group (currently ranging in age from 12 to 22) usually meets the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month after 10am service (~11:15am-1:00pm) in the Sunday School rooms. This month our leaders are at training 2/5, and Rock and Robin are out of town 2/19. Next month?

Shrove Tuesday Dinner, 6:30pm Tuesday February 21, in the Guild room.

Ash Wednesday is February 22. Services at 7:00am and 7:00pm.

Tea and Company with St. John’s Manor is on the fourth Thursday of each month, 3:00pm at the Manor. Joan makes the most delicious tea- you must try some! The 4th Thursday this month is 1/26. A Pharmacist is coming to discuss interactions between common medications and foods.

The Beach Cities Interfaith Services food for February is tuna and soup. They are grateful for whatever we can bring. Peanut butter and jelly are always helpful. There is a continuing need for toiletry items, both personal size and family size and SOCKS- any kind of socks. Any and all staple food items are always welcome. The number of people in poverty in Orange County has doubled in the last year. That’s right- doubled! Our goal is to bring one food item (can, jar, box, bag, carton, etc.) per person each Sunday. Please help!

Do you have clothes you no longer need? We need clothes for men, women, and children in shelters. The men’s prison ministry is in need of long-sleeved shirts and XL XXl and XXL underwear. Drop off whatever you can spare at the church. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes please tag your donation with your name and address.

Socks! One of the most needed items for people on the streets and for the children at Orangewood is socks. New or gently used socks for men, women, and children are much appreciated. note that Orangewood can no longer accdept used items, only new clothes WITH TAGS STILL ATTACHED!!!

The Rainbow Outreach Men’s Prison Ministries have been overwhelmed recently by federal mandates to the state to reduce prison populations. 7 new inmates have joined the Rainbow Outreach program in January because they had nowhere else to go. That is a 23% increase with more surely to come. We still need tootbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, cream, shaving DEODORANT, Gold Bond Powder, NON-ALCOHOLIC MOUTH WASH, bath towels, washcloths. NOTE: NO MORE SOAP NEEDED! They are also in need of long-sleeved men’s dress shirts (needed for job interviews). Used but not worn out items gratefully accepted, including any men’s clothes. Thank you for your contributions. Tax deduction receipts always available upon your request.

Do you still read a paper? Please bring your recyclable newspapers in the box in the Guild Room or drop them directly in the recycle bin in the parking lot.

We have started a new ministry to help St. Clement’s, Huntington Park keep their doors open. We will try to supply their toilet paper needs for the coming year. Bring new supplies of toilet paper to the church for delivery.
