St. John the Divine Episcopal Church was founded in 1955 as a mission congregation of the Diocese of Los Angeles. The first building was constructed in 1957 and functioned as Sanctuary, Sunday School and Parish Hall. It remains our Parish Hall to this day and is called our Guild Room. What is now our sanctuary building was erected in 19??. St. John’s Manor, a senior housing community, was added in 1984.

St. John’s acquired parish status in 1986 and continues to minister to its members, neighborhood and the surrounding community of Costa Mesa through worship and service.

Many accessories and decorations of the church are identified in a self guided tour framed on the wall of the rear of the church.

St. John the Divine is our Patron Saint. This is the name given to the author of the last book of the Bible: The Revelation to John. The author of this book is called a divine because of his discerning vision (divination) and to distinguish him from other saints named John. While the formal name for our church is St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, we are frequently referred to as St. John’s.
